Forty years ago the creek flowing through Johnstown, New York carried raw sewage, animal hair, grease, dyes, chromium salts, arsenic, benzene, formaldehyde, toluene, and acetone from the tanneries.
As testament to the restorative power of nature (plus several hundred million dollars in Cleans Water Act funds) the Cayadutta Creek is now a thriving trout fishing stream:
